Wheaton College Wrestling Camp June/July Sessions

2019 Wheaton College Wrestling Camp

 
Come train with Wheaton head wrestling coach and Olympian Jim Gruenwald!

This camp is for wrestlers in grades 1-12. Wrestlers will be grouped appropriately based on ability and experience. Wrestlers should meet in the Great Hall (near the front desk) at the entry of the Sports and Recreation Complex.

Activities and Intro to Wrestling Session (10 AM - 12 PM)

Games, tumbling/gymnastics skills, and basics of wrestling - $100
**Session + lunch - $130

The primary goal of this camp is to introduce wrestling to new wrestlers and to build the basic fundamental skills of beginning and experienced wrestlers.  The session will include games, gymnastics, tumbling, balance, and basics of wrestling with a little bit of live wrestling.  Any wrestler, from beginner to serious high school wrestler would benefit from improving fundamentals and learning to control their body.

Advanced Wrestling Session (1:30-3:30 PM)
Warm up, technique sessions, live wrestling, cool down - $100
**Session + lunch - $130

This camp is designed for the serious wrestler.  The training session will follow the format of a college wrestling program and include a warm up, hand fighting, situational wrestling, live wrestling, and a cool down.  Age is not a limit but be prepared to work hard. 

Combo Sessions (10 AM-3:30 PM)
Includes both sessions - $175
**Combo sessions + lunch - $200


**Lunch will be provided on Wheaton’s campus at the award-winning Bon Appetite dining hall.

Coaching Staff 
Jim Gruenwald is in his 11th year as the head wrestling coach for the Thunder wrestling team in 2018-19. Gruenwald, a two-time member of the US Olympic Greco Roman wrestling team, came to Wheaton after serving as an assistant coach for US Greco Roman wrestling team at the US Olympic Education Center in Marquette, Michigan since 2005. Gruenwald finished sixth at 60 kg in the greco roman competition at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and was 10th at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. A three-time US Champion, Gruenwald completed his competitive career in 2008 as a National Champion, he also won titles in 2003 and 2004.

Frank Aiello returns to his alma mater after graduating in 2018. A two-time CCIW Champion, Aiello earned All-American honors with a fourth place finish at 165 pounds at the 2018 NCAA Championships. Aiello finished in the top six at the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational three times in his career and was awarded the Pete George Sportsmanship Award in 2015.

A four-time CCIW Champion, Stephen Aiello returns to his alma mater after graduating in 2017. Aiello was a three-time National Qualifier and earned All-American honors as a freshman in 2014. Aiello was a three-time tournament champion at Wheaton including twice winning his weight class at the Messiah Invitational. Aiello's brothers Frank and David are still members of the Thunder wrestling team.

Camp staff will also include other current and former Wheaton College wrestlers.

Camp Goals
•  Develop character and leadership skills
•  Knowledge of proper nutrition
•  Learn to wrestle smart and hard
•  Build up core strength and improve athletic skills, i.e. Proprioception and kinesthetic awareness
•  Learning high-percentage low-risk techniques
•  Learning to be a complete wrestler by using the whole body.

Necessary Items
•  Good attitude, willingness to work hard and learn
•  Wrestling shoes, socks and shorts,
•  T-shirt (2 recommended per day)
•  Appropriate undergarment
•  Water bottle.

Camp Schedule
EACH SESSION WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING
1.) Warm-up,
2.) Core strength development and improvement of athletic skills
3.) Technique
4) Semi-live wrestling
5.) Finish with small segment on nutrition, character, or leadership.
